The Summit Social Media SUV had a planned stop at a hotel in Mount Juliet, TN which recently had a devastating tornado go through the town. The Summit Social Media SUV had also planned to travel through Arkansas. Arkansas also experienced a tornado yesterday, though not on the path of our journey. The hotel we were planning to stay at in Mount Juliet was not far from the path of the tornado. We would ask that you keep the people in those towns in prayer as they deal with the physical destruction as we navigate the COVID-19 pandemic.

We also want to keep Zimbabwe in prayer. Leadership in Zimbabwe took notice of markedly improved school attendance and behavior issues in the few schools that have incorporated Awana in their weekly curriculum. They recently opened the door to public schools in Zimbabwe to be trained to integrate Awana into their schools. Zimbabwe has around 3.5 million primary age children, the harvest is great. Can you imagine being at the ground floor of an opportunity that not only exposes children to the gospel, but could change a whole nation!?!? If Awana can bring Jesus to such a large population of Zimbabwe through the schools, these children will grow up to be the parents and future leaders of this nation.

Some of the schools have been trained already. Here are some pictures of that training as well as a picture of one of the school rooms.

The remaining funding needed to complete this project is $75,000.  It takes only $650 to start Awana in one school.  This could CHANGE A WHOLE NATION!

A generous Awana donor in IL donated $8,500 to the ministry in hopes that Summit will come together to raise an additional $8,500 to disciple these children in African schools.  Perhaps reaching a nation in the shortest amount of time!!

Today would have been the day that the Summit Social Media SUV would have rolled out, beginning its journey to Summit, but instead, it is parked as we honor the “stay at home” order that has been issued in the county where we live.

Though we are not physically headed to Summit, we are headed for the LIVE Summit event coming this Saturday (April 4, 2020) at 7pm CDT – details to come next week. We hope to “see” you there!

As we embark on this week of Summit, I think of one of the special aspects of Summit, the way we show God’s love to one another, and encourage one another. Our challenge to you this week is to embrace that same spirit even though we are not physically together. Though we may be practicing social distancing, and abiding by local orders to stay at home, we live in an age where we can reach hundreds, even thousands, or even just that one who needs it, by using technology. This could be the time where you can encourage someone where time seemed to prohibit it before. A simple phone call, or even a handwritten letter can do wonders to encourage another. What can you do this week to encourage someone?

The Summit Offering

Hello Summit!

I hope you and your family are doing well during these challenging times.

As Quizmaster, I’m sorry we are unable to be together in person, but we are together in Christ and know that He is in full control!

I want to THANK all those in leadership at SUMMIT for allowing Awana International again this year to share an exciting opportunity for the 2020 Summit offering.

God is opening doors in unprecedented ways.  Awana is being introduced into primary schools (ages 5-12) thanks to the Secretary of Education in Zimbabwe AS PART OF THEIR WEEKLY CURRICULUM!  The first phase will be to train and equip 325 schools which will reach an average of 500 children in EACH SCHOOL!!

Some of the schools have been trained already.  Over the next few days we will be showing pictures and videos of what God is already doing in Zimbabwe through Awana.

Time for the Summit Social Media SUV to get “back on the road”. Watch for updates here, as well on Facebook and Instagram. This is going to be a great week!

The Summit team understands the disappointment of having to cancel Summit 2020. It is our goal to minimize the impact as much as we can as we honor the work the participants have put into preparing for Summit this year. Here is what is planned to still take place for Summit 2020:

FINE ARTS will continue.

All of the Fine Arts categories will be judged, and scholarships will be awarded. Most of the fine arts categories have been submitted and judged already. There are two categories that take place at Summit, Visual Arts and Creative writing. These will also be accommodated.

Visual Art submissions that would have been brought to Summit will need be submitted electronically by either a digital photograph(s) or video (1-minute maximum/no narration) and sent to finearts@summit-journey.org. We will allow videos for those who may have a sculpture or other piece where a photograph does not present the piece well. Submissions will need to be made no later than Thursday, April 2^nd @ 3:00 pm CDT. All documentation must be provided just as it would be required if you carried the piece to Summit – please be sure to include those cover sheets.

Creative writing will be held similar to how it would have been performed at Summit. Those who registered for creative writing will meet via a Zoom conference call where they will be given the prompt to begin their writing. They will be writing on a computer with a proctor (yes, you need to find a proctor) in the room and then submit their writing via e-mail within the allotted time frame to the Fine Arts venue leader. This will take place at the same time it would have taken place at Summit, Thursday, April 2^nd @ 3pm CDT. A link for the Zoom meeting will be sent to all who have submitted their first portion of the writing competition.

Refunds will begin being sent via a check from West Coast Honor Camp this week and the plan is to have all in the mail within two weeks. Those that signed up for Fine Arts will have that portion subtracted and the balance will be sent to you via the US Postal Service.

Summit T-Shirts

We do plan to print Summit 2020 T-shirts and make that an optional item (prices w/ shipping coming soon) that we could deduct from your already paid fees. An email will be sent out with information to the registered team contact person. We would prefer to ship them in bulk to one person – details to follow in direct email message.

Here is some exciting news…

We are working to have the Summit 2020 Awards Online!

On Saturday, April 4^th at 7pm CDT, we are working on having a live program online where we will announce the Fine Arts winners, the T-Shirt Design Contest winner, as well as the dates and location for Summit 2021 (and maybe a few surprises).

Other aspects of Summit 2020 that we have addressed.

We will be promoting and taking an offering for Summit. Even though Summit had to be cancelled, people still need to know about Jesus. We will be sharing about the offering and how you can give on the Summit Blog once details are worked out.

Citation Award earners that were looking forward to receiving their Citation award at Summit 2020 will be allowed to participate by walking and receiving their Citation award at Summit 2021. We know that you have worked hard to achieve this goal and we want to honor you in this way.

As for the other aspects of Summit, we are unable to accommodate them this year, and we are unable to allow 2020 graduates to return and compete on the Journey high school teams in 2021. The Summit team is looking at establishing an Alumni circle during AwanaGames and Volleyball (with enough signing up) which would allow those who would have competed this year to compete next year with other Awana Alumni. Details are being worked out for this alumni competition and will be conveyed via the Summit website and blog as they are finalized in the Fall.

While we are saddened by the cancellation of Summit 2020, our prayer is that this helps ease the disappointment. We hope you will join us on April 4^th for the closing program and to find out where and when Summit 2021 will be held.
